Issue
The intersection of Lawrence and Lincoln Road is a busy and active area for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. This intersection is a main crossing point connecting the North and South sides of the Lawrence Estates including access to the Lincoln Rd gate of the Fells Reservation. Speeding is a known issue and enforcement is rarely if ever seen. Crossing the street is always challenging especially during morning and evening commuting hours. Distracted drivers often do not notice the cross walk and flashing lights.
Status:
There currently is a marked crosswalk and a continuous solar powered flashing walk sign / light.
Proposal:
To improve crosswalk visibility, slow traffic and reduce pedestrian vulnerability we are proposing the following.
- Exchange constant flashing yellow walk sign with push button activated flashing and blinking lights.
Notes: High St near the Brooks Elementary School has 3 of these installations where we’d like to replicate and / or closely follow the same approach. (See Image A and Image B)
Create sidewalk bump-out near new crosswalk signs to slow drivers by narrowing the flow of traffic.
Notes: High St near the Brooks Elementary School has 3 of these installations where we’d like to replicate and / or closely follow the same approach.(See Image A and Image B)
Create raised crosswalk and dual purpose speed table.
Notes: There is a raised crosswalk and speed hump on Winthrop St near Veterans Memorial Park where we’d like to replicate and / or closely follow the same approach.(See Image C)
